Meteor Shower August 2010 (Tonight): What Time and Tips for Best Viewing!

What Time is the Meteor Shower?

The exact time of the Perseid meteor shower is not known but astronomers believe that tonight between the hours of 8pm and early tomorrow morning around 2am are the optimal viewing times. The Moon is just a couple of days past new at the shower's peak, so there will be no moonlight to interfere with the faint meteors. The shower should reach its peak in the hours after midnight (before dawn on August 13), with a maximum of a few dozen meteors visible per hour

The shower itself arrives annually and, this year, was expected to light up the skies from August 11 through to the 13th.

What’s the Best Way to See the Shower?

The best way to view this shower (and any meteor shower, for that matter) is in an area with minimal light. If you can drive to the country where there are no street lights or buildings, you’ll get a much better view than you will in the city. Furthermore, if you live near a lake – or are visiting a cottage – and have a boat, taking the boat into the middle of the lake or ocean will be, by far, the best way to view the show.
